Payment via Private Health Insurer

If you have a private health insurance policy, your provider is the first call to find out if you are covered. Not all insurance policies cover all procedures, and sometimes people might not be 100% sure whether they are covered.
As always, your health should be the first priority, and once you have greater insight into the nature of your condition, Dr Won will be able to help you navigate the system and consider your options.

Payment via Superannuation

Payment is sometimes possible out of your super fund. Once you have greater insight into the nature of your condition, Dr Won will be able to help you facilitate.

Public System

Depending on your condition, there may be some related fees or expenses that are not covered by Medicare. Dr Won and his team will help you to understand the public health system and any likely out-of-pocket expenses.

Public bariatric patients are based on strict criteria. Dr Won is one of very few surgeons providing bariatric surgery for public patients.

Other Related Fees

Anaesthetist Fees
This fee may vary from approximately $500 - $850, depending on the Anaesthetist and the procedure. Your anaesthetist will contact you prior to your procedure to confirm these fees.

Hospital Fees
Most Private Health Funds will charge an ‘Excess’ when you are admitted to a private hospital for a procedure. This will vary depending on your level of cover and your Health Insurance Provider. It may range from $0-$500. You should contact your Health Fund for more detail.

Dietitian Fees
After weight loss surgery, you will be expected to visit a Dietitian at least (5) five times. One (1) pre-operative consultation and at least four (4) post-operative consultations. The initial appointment is $130 and followups are $70. Patients with private health cover will most likely be eligible to receive a rebate, however you will need to contact your provider to confirm. Some patients will qualify for a Care Plan which can be arranged via your GP.

Psychologist Fees
You will be expected to visit our Psychologist at least twice. One (1) pre-operative consultation (prior to your surgery) and one (1) post-operative consultation approximately 6 weeks after surgery. The Psychologist’s initial fee is $195 and the followup fee is $175. Other follow up appointments may be required. Patients with private health cover will most likely be eligible to receive a rebate, however you will need to contact your provider to confirm. Some patients may qualify for a Mental Health Care Plan which can be arranged via your GP.

Additional Specialist Fees

Some patients will need to see other specialists prior to their surgery, such as a Cardiologist, Respiratory physician, or Endocrinologist. These may incur an additional cost depending on whether you have private health cover and your level of cover.

Investigative Fees

You will likely require blood tests and potentially other investigative procedures such as X-rays. These may incur an additional cost depending on whether you have private health cover and your level of cover.

Pharmaceutical Expenses

Prior to your weight loss procedure you will be required to commence a low calorie meal replacement diet (ie. Optifast or Optislim). You will need to purchase these meal replacements. There will also likely be ongoing pharmaceutical expenses for medications, vitamins and the like.
