Gallstones

Gallstones are small stones that are made from a mixture that forms from build up of cholesterol, bile pigment and calcium salts. They are common and affect around 20-25 percent of people aged 50 and over.

There are three main types of gallstone, with mixed stones being the most common type. Mixed stones are made up of cholesterol and salts and are often harmless. Cholesterol stones are made up of cholesterol and resemble a fat like substance that can become crucial to your metabolic process. These kinds of stones are large enough to block bile ducts. Another type of stones are pigment stones. These are normally quite small and harmless however there are often many of them.

Whilst in most cases gallstones don’t cause problems, you might be prompted to get treatment if the stones block ducts and complications arise such as infections or inflammation of the pancreas. Surgeons can remove your gallbladder laparoscopically if the stones are causing complications.

The gallbladder is not a vital organ, and you can go about living a normal life without it.
